Rosalind Babette (“Roz”) Kay loved her family and friends, movies, running, pecan pie, Neil Diamond, popcorn, dirty jokes, and cats. She spent the first part of her life in Queens, New York, and then moved to Phoenix, Arizona with her parents and two younger brothers. She attended West Phoenix High and later graduated from the University of Arizona with a teaching degree.
She taught grade school in San Antonio, Texas where she met her future husband, Conrad Michael (“Casey”) Kay, while he was stationed at Kelly Air Force Base. They married in 1963 shortly before Casey left to serve as a flight instructor in the Vietnam War. Casey returned to the States after the war and began his career as a pilot for American Airlines, initially based at Love Field in Dallas, Texas. Roz and Casey made their home in nearby Arlington, Texas and raised their two daughters there.
Roz earned a pilot’s license of her own and was a member of the Ninety-Nines, an international organization of women pilots founded in 1929. She was an avid runner, taught lifesaving courses through the University of Texas at Arlington aquatics program, and enjoyed riding on the back of Casey’s motorcycle as they toured the Texas Hill Country with their friends.
Working as a homemaker while her daughters were in grade school, Roz was active as a room mother and dance and piano lesson chauffeur. Once the girls reached high school, she worked as an office administrator for an Arlington dental practice and devoted hundreds of volunteer hours to Planned Parenthood and local literacy and tutoring programs.
Roz and Casey celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. Shortly after Casey’s death in 2014, Roz moved to Chicago to be closer to one of her daughters, her son in law, and grandsons. She was known around the Hyde Park community as the dynamo pushing her shopping caddy, traversing the neighborhood sidewalks at all times of the year, rain or shine.
Generous, kind, quick-witted, and gentle, Roz was loved by her family and friends. She is preceded in death by parents, Leo and Deborah Rubinow, survived by her daughters, Rachel Kay, of Noblesville, Indiana, Jennifer Kay (Steve Lord) of Chicago, Illinois, two grandsons, Jonathan Kay-Lord and David Kay-Lord, brothers Jay Rubinow (Sherry), and Sidney Rubinow (Karen).
