Edward Keating

–

Chicago, Illinois

Edward M. Keating, born December 14, 1930, at rest September 16, 2026. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (nee Ciszewski) Keating; his children Edward G. Keating (Dianne Adelberg), Mary Claire Allvine (Douglas), and Catherine F. Keating (Dr. Andrew F. Griffin). Beloved Baba to his grandchildren Louise (Lulu) Griffin, Gavin Allvine, Margaret (Meg) Griffin, and Addison Allvine. Devoted brother-in-law to Frank and Marcia Ciszewski, Joanne Keating, Mary Keating, and Paula Keating. Dear Uncle Eddie to numerous nieces and nephews and cherished cousin to the Dowd, Keating, and Motier families. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Catherine (nee Dowd) Keating, and his brothers Louis, John, Thomas, and James.

Ed and Dorothy raised their children in Homewood, Illinois, appreciating the tight-knit community, excellent public schools, and access to the Illinois Central to commute to the city. Ed spent the past decades in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood where he was a parishioner of St. Clement Catholic Church.

Ed was an officer in the United States Naval Reserves in the 1950s, serving as a Lieutenant Junior Grade stationed on the U.S.S. Rochester. A proud graduate of Leo High School, Illinois Institute of Technology, and DePaul law school, Ed was an intellectual property attorney at a number of Chicago law firms including: Parker & Carter; and Cook Alex, Ltd. Ed thrived as a patent attorney and had a particular skill and devotion to working with inventors to protect their intellectual property.

In addition to his formal education in engineering and law, Ed was a life-long learner and avid reader. Ed had deep knowledge of American history with a focus on World Wars I and II, western expansion, and French colonies in North America. Although he did not play a musical instrument, he loved music, and relished listening to his wife, children, and grandchildren play music together.

At work and at home, Ed had a delightful sense of humor and was ready for a pun or a joke anytime. He faced his elder years with grace and dignity, enjoying candy, coffee, wine, and good food as long as he was able to. Ed believed you should always save room for dessert!

Ed appreciated the outstanding medical care he received throughout his long life. He especially benefitted from the guidance of the Palliative Care team at Northwestern University. Ed valued scientific research and made the generous choice to be a donor to the Anatomical Gift Association (AGA) of Illinois. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Catholic Charities: https://www.catholiccharities.net/ or a charity of your choice.
